Course Description
The IOSH Working Safely Course provides an essential introduction to workplace health and safety, helping learners understand the importance of working safely and recognising the risks and hazards that can occur in the workplace.
The course begins by introducing workplace health and safety and explains why maintaining a safe working environment is important. It also highlights key health and safety statistics to demonstrate the potential consequences of workplace accidents, injuries and ill health.
Learners will explore workers’ rights and responsibilities, the role of workers and safety representatives, and important health and safety terminology used in the workplace.
Workplace Hazards and Risk
The course explains how workplace injuries and illnesses can occur and highlights the importance of recognising potential hazards and assessing the risks associated with them.
Learners will develop an understanding of risk assessment, including the meaning of “reasonably practicable”, as well as the importance of incident reporting and organisational learning in improving workplace health and safety.
The course also examines common workplace hazards and the controls that can be used to reduce or manage associated risks.
Health and Safety Responsibilities
The IOSH Working Safely training explores the responsibilities organisations have for managing health and safety in the workplace.
This includes good health and safety practice, appropriate training and ways organisations can continually improve their approach to workplace safety.
The course also considers how hazardous attitudes and behaviours can contribute to workplace accidents and why promoting a positive safety culture is important.
Health and Safety Management
Learners will be introduced to key documented management systems designed to help organisations ensure that work is carried out safely and efficiently.
The course covers performance checking, active monitoring, safety committees, workplace inspections and investigations, helping learners understand how these activities contribute to effective health and safety management.
The final section examines accident investigation, health surveillance, health monitoring and reviews, and explains their role in maintaining and improving the health and safety of people at work.

Assessment
IOSH Working Safely course exam & assessment.
The course is assessed in 2 parts.
- Multiple choice examination in which candidates must demonstrate what they have learnt.
- Practical risk identification assessment in which participants must show how to apply the knowledge they have gained throughout the course.
- Successful candidates receive an official IOSH Working Safely® Digital Certificate issued by IOSH.
