COURSE DESCRIPTION
Mental health can have a significant impact on children and young people, affecting their wellbeing, behaviour, relationships and everyday lives. Developing an awareness of common mental health issues can help those who work with children and young people recognise potential concerns and provide appropriate support.
This Children and Young People’s Mental Health Course provides an introduction to mental health problems affecting children and young people. The course explores a range of mental health conditions, their potential causes and risk factors, common signs and symptoms, available treatments and sources of support.
Learners will also explore how mental health professionals can support children and young people, the role parents can play and practical ways to promote positive mental health.
Mental Health Issues in Children and Young People
The course explores a range of mental health conditions that may affect children and young people, including ADHD, depression, self-harm, eating disorders, schizophrenia, post-traumatic stress disorder, bipolar disorder, panic disorder and social phobia.
It also introduces autism and learning difficulties in the context of the course content, helping learners develop broader awareness of issues that may affect children and young people’s wellbeing and support needs.
Recognising Signs and Symptoms
An important part of children and young people’s mental health awareness is being able to recognise potential signs and symptoms.
The course explores common indicators of mental health difficulties, along with potential causes and risk factors. Learners will develop a better understanding of when concerns may require additional support and what actions can be taken when a mental health issue is suspected.
Treatment and Support
The course introduces a range of treatment and support approaches, including psychotherapy, mindfulness, play therapy, cognitive behavioural therapy and medication.
Learners will also explore the roles of professionals such as psychologists, psychiatrists, psychiatric nurses and clinical social workers, as well as the role parents can play in supporting children and young people.
