About this Qualification
The purpose of the Functional Skills English Level 1 qualification is to prepare the learner for work, study and life. Learners who achieve this qualification will demonstrate the ability to read, write, speak, listen and communicate in English. Learners will be able to apply these skills effectively to a range of purposes in the workplace and in real life situations.

Qualification Structure
This qualification is assessed via 2 external assessments and one controlled assessment.
The external assessments cover the following components:
• Reading – In this unit, learners will learn how to read and obtain information from different printed and online sources. They will learn how to use reference materials and spelling strategies to support understanding and learners will learn how to read and understand meaning and purpose in a variety of texts. They will also learn to use a range of reading strategies to support understanding.
• Writing – In this unit, learners will learn how to write to communicate ideas for different audiences and purposes and learners will learn how to improve the accuracy of their writing through using accurate spelling, punctuation and grammar.
The controlled assessment covers the following component:
• Speaking, Listening and Communicating – In this unit, learners will learn how to listen and respond to spoken language in a variety of contexts, learners will learn how to listen and respond to spoken language in a variety of contexts and earners will learn how to speak to communicate information, ideas and opinions in a variety of contexts.
